AT SCHOOL,I am a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, a rigorous but distinguishing course load with extra graduation requirements. One of the requirements to graduate with an IB diploma is that you write a 4,000 word "extended essay" on any subject. I chose to analyze the language of cookbooks. I haven't decided if I am going to compare a few cookbooks representative of their era or if I am going to focus on Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Either way, I recently purchased her cookbook and was excited to try a recipe. I went with the classic Boeuf Bourguignon for my first and served it over garlicky mashed potatoes. It was the perfect comfort food for the coldest day of the year.
